This is the perfect hat for beginners to crochet. It’s very simple, yet
produces a nice finished result that you can actually wear or give as a gift.
Play with color and band edging once you get the hang of it, or make more rounds
for a slouch hat. This basic style also produces great charity hats as well.

This pattern produces a nearly invisible seam. When
beginning each round, I place one (and only ever one) dc in the same stitch as
the join. When increasing rounds, I start out the same (one dc in join) and end
the round with 2 dc in the last stitch. It’s a minor thing, but I prefer making
simple beanies this way because there are no gaps near the join and the seam is
barely noticeable. I think it just makes it a bit more polished.
I’ve included instructions for Preemie, Baby, Toddler,
Child, Adult Female (Sm/Med), and Adult Male (Med/Lg) according to Craft Yarn
Council’s Standards and Guidelines for Crochet sizing, as well as a chart for
quick reference.
If you have the person available for whom you want to make
the hat, you can do a little easy math. As you may remember, the diameter of a
circle equals its circumference divided by 3.14 (pi). Measure the circumference
of said head and subtract 2.5 to 5 cm (or 1 to 2 inches to account for stretch).
Divide the result by pi. This final number will be the diameter of your initial
circle (the beginning of the hat, worked in rounds of increases). Once you
reach that diameter, stop increasing and crochet the following rounds with no
increases until your reach your desired length. Length of the hat will equal
the person’s measurement from crown to bottom of ear. Here’s an example of a hat
I might make for myself: I have a head circumference of 53.5 cm (21”).
Therefore, (53.5-2.5)/3.14=16.2 cm (6.4”) for the diameter of my circle (about 5 rounds). My
crown to bottom-of-ear measurement is 20 cm (8”) for the length of my hat. Keep
in mind that you have some wiggle room when you crochet. You’re measurements
will not necessarily come out to the exact decimal place while you work, and
that’s ok. Just round up or down to the nearest measurement.
INSTRUCTIONS

Notes: Sl st in top of first st to join rounds (see pic below), st count
will always include beg ch. Work is not turned.
Instead of ‘Ch 3, Rnd 1’ you can make a magic circle if you’re so inclined.
I prefer to 'ch 2' when I dc. I think a 'ch 3' is too long, especially when making joins in the top of the first st. It's personal preference, but I know I'm not the only one who does this. ;)

Hello there. While following your instructions. the second row should be 24 stitches...it throws the pattern off.. Or am miss reading the instructions.. Thank you

ReplyDeleteHello all! I am getting a lot of messages telling me my stitch numbers are incorrect or that my pattern is written wrong. While I appreciate your concern, this pattern is done differently for a reason. Please also note, I do not ‘ch 2 and turn’ at the end of rounds. I just keep going. I promise it is written correctly and if followed, you’ll have a nice hat with a barely noticeable seam.
