Messy Bun Hat-Free Crochet Pattern

Messy Bun Hats are the thing right now. They're so easy to make and look really cute. Here's a free pattern (below) to make your own Messy Bun Hat. If you prefer the printable pdf, visit my ravelry store: http://www.ravelry.com/designers/orange-september

Skill Level: Easy

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn, any color, any fiber, about 2 oz (57 g) or 100 yards (91 m). Hat in photos was created using Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice Yarn in Olive and Light Mustard, and Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in Gray Mist
J-10 (6.00 mm) crochet hook
Large-eye blunt needle for weaving ends

Gauge: 4"= 13 hdc stitches and 10 rounds

Finished measurement: 21.5” (55.0 cm) un-stretched band circumference, 6.5” (16.5 cm) height. Will fit teen/small adult.

Stitch reference:
beg=beginning
ch=chain
hdc=half double crochet
rnd=round
sc=single crochet
sl st=slip stitch
st=stitch

Note: [cc] indicates a color change if following color pattern in example

INSTRUCTIONS:
Band
Ch 8
Row 1: sc in 2nd loop from hook and each st across. (7 sts)
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in back loops across. (7 sts).
Row 3-61: repeat row 2.
Bring row 1 in front to meet last row. Ch 1, sl st through back loops of each row to join.
Rotate your work so that you are now working stitches around edge of the band you just made. From this point forward, you will be working in the round. Do not turn your work at the end of rounds. Your first stitch of the round, following rnd 1, will always be worked into the same stitch as beginning chain. You will join each round (unless otherwise stated) with a sl st in the top of your first stitch.

Hat:
Rnd 1: ch 1, place 71 evenly spaced sc sts around edge of band. It helps to place a sc at the end of every row, increasing in approx. every 6th st. Sl st in top of first st to join. [cc]
Rnd 2: ch 1, hdc in same st as join, hdc in each st around, sl st to join. (71 sts)
Rnd 3: repeat rnd 2. (71 sts) [cc]
Rnd 4: repeat rnd 2. (71 sts)
Rnd 5: ch 1, hdc in same st as join, hdc in next 4 sts, hdc2tog, *hdc in next 6 sts, hdc2tog. Repeat from * around, sl st to join. (62 sts) [cc]

Rnd 7: ch 1, hdc in same st as join, hdc in next 3 sts, hdc2tog, *hdc in next 5 sts, hdc2tog. Repeat from * around, sl st to join. (53 sts)
Rnd 8: repeat rnd 2. (53 sts)
Rnd 9: ch 1, hdc in same st as join, hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog, *hdc in next 4 sts, hdc2tog. Repeat from * around, sl st to join. (44 sts)
